Most male and female taxi drivers that have been doing this job for years and would go above and beyond including my grandfather who worked as a taxi driver, to make sure their passengers are safe, and I had a recent experience of this. I was asked by a colleague to pick up a car from a Falkirk car showroom and drop off to the customer at an address in Stranraer. After researching the area for drop off, I realised it was a very large countryside area, with no buses or trains nearby and the nearest shop or house was 10 miles away. I decided to book a taxi to pick me up at the drop off location the following day hoping to eliminate any stress of being in an unfamiliar area or stranded. The following day, I set off in my journey and put the address in the sat nav. 2 hours later, I found myself in the middle of the countryside in Stranraer without mobile signal and at the wrong address.

I started to feel very vulnerable as I had no idea of my surroundings or where I was. The taxi driver that I had booked phoned to ask where I was and informed me that I was at the wrong address (he was at the correct address) and gave me directions on how to get there. However, I only had a phone signal for a couple of seconds so I couldn’t hear all the directions and I had no idea where he was. After 20 minutes of U turns and driving around in a panic, I finally found the address and the driver was waiting for me. He had been driving about for 30 mins looking for me, realising there was no mobile signal and it would be hard for me to call another taxi, he waited for me and made sure I was picked up.

I would like to thank the driver from McLean Taxis in Stranraer. I’m sorry I didn’t get his name but I’m so grateful to him for waiting for me and taking me back safely to civilisation. Unfortunately, these are the drivers we don’t hear enough about; the good guys. It’s the bad guys, and the journeys from hell, that are dominating the headlines.
